Project Description

The Tennessee National Guard Base in Smyrna, Tennessee currently has a mix of old copper infrastructure with limited fiber connectivity between major facilities within the base limits. The Tennessee National Guard, through the Tennessee Department of Finance and Administration procurement process, selected Wiser to provide the design of the infrastructure to provide both voice and data connection to over twenty eight buildings within the complex.

In conjunction with design services, Wiser provided utility mapping for the National Guard Site. Wiser utilized ground penetrating radar (GPR) to capture the horizontal and vertical location of existing utilities Wiser performed a topographic survey of the area in order to terrain correct the GPR data. Above-ground utility features were surveyed and used to help identify the subsurface features found in the GPR data.

3-Dimensional feature data were exported to a CAD environment for delivery. This data could then be overlaid on existing plans, GIS data and aerial photography. Wiser successfully identified water, sewer, storm, gas, and communication lines including a critical fiber optic line through a unique combination of ground penetrating radar, electromagnetic locating and traditional survey techniques. All identified utilities are SUE Quality Level B as defined in ASCE Standard CI/ASCE 38-02.
